Summary
An iron chest or strong-box, German, circa 1600. Sometimes called an Armada chest, of typical form and with the remains of painted floral decoration incorporating small angelic faces, best preserved at the back of the strong-box as seen in the image here, also with carrying handles at both ends and twin loops and hasps to the front for padlocks, the keyhole for the interior locking mechanism is cleverly concealed by a sliding cover on the lid.
Provenance
Provenance unknown for certain, but possibly with the house in 1953. It is mentioned in files dated 1971.
