Summary
An ash high-back hoop-back Windsor armchair, West Country, circa 1820. The six spindles in the back slightly splayed from the arm-bow upwards and with angled under-arm ring-turned supports for the outswept arms, the sycamore seat with turned legs and H-stretcher, some remains of green paint.
Full description
The particular features that define the West Country attribution include the seat having a straight front edge, the use of sycamore for the seat itself and the long spindles in the back being morticed through the hoop but left unpegged. This chair is illustrated in Bernard Cotton 'The English Regional chair', Woodbridge 1990, page 274, Fig SW39 and captioned 'Courtesy National Trust, Lanhydrock, Cornwall'.
