Summary
Miniature - Part of a small watercolour miniature by Mary Dowling of the head and shoulders of a fair haired little girl wearing a white dress, pink bows in her hair. In gold(?) square frame with chain; on the back of which is inscribed Eleiana/at 18 months/30th March 1909. In blue leather case from Elkington and Co. Ltd., Court Jeweller, 73 Cheapside. Ivory?,
Provenance
from the bequest of Miss Kathleen Penny, Croydon, 2004, who was daughter of Arthur Pawle Penny, son of Mary, and nephew of Elizabeth Holmes, Mary's sister. Elizabeth married Edward Holmes who was the grandson of the Rev. Edward Holmes who married Miss Dickinson, c.1784, daughter of the Rev. Timothy Dickinson, brother of Caleb, grandfather of Mary Dickinson who married Thomas Charles, 2nd Lord Robartes and 6th Viscount Clifden. See family tree on file. This little girl is the grand daughter of Mary Dowling who painted her the year before she died, and sister of Kathleen Penny, benefactress.
