Summary
Watercolour on card, Elizabeth Dowling, Mrs Edward Holmes (d.1921) by Mary Dowling, Mrs William Penny (1818-1910), Full-length portrait of a dark haired woman seated wearing black with ? on her lap.
Provenance
from the bequest of Miss Kathleen Penny, Croydon, 2004, who was daughter of Arthur Pawle Penny, son of Mary who painted the portrait and nephew of Elizabeth Holmes, her sister. Elizabeth married Edward Holmes who was the grandson of the Rev. Edward Holmes who married Miss Dickinson, c.1784, daughter of the Rev. Timothy Dickinson, brother of Caleb, grandfather of Mary Dickinson who married Thomas Charles, 2nd Lord Robartes and 6th Viscount Clifden. See family tree on file. (Franscesca Scoones mentions this is Aunt Mary, presumably Mary Penny's aunt, but on Conservation Report it is listed under Great Aunt E Dowling, so could she be Kathleen Penny's great aunt Elizabeth Holmes, nee Dowling?)
