Photograph, Eton Society 1906: including The Hon. Arthur Victor Agar Robartes, 8th Viscount Clifden (1887-1974). Framed black and white school photograph of members of the Eton Society in 1906 standing and sitting on steps outside building at Eton with the names of the 29 young men written below photograph. 'Agar Robartes' written in pencil on back of mount. Back row left to right: H.S.E. Bury, N.E. Barber, C.Clifton-Brown, G.M.E. Lucas, C.L. Boxall, Hon. A.V. Agar-Robartes, .P.P. Gregory, R.A. Knox. Third row: A.W.F. Donkin, H.B. Robson, R.C.N. Ashton, H.J. Hodgson, R.H.A. Carter, Hon. J.H.F. Grenfell, R.G.G. Robson, Hon. C.A. Lister, G.R.L. Anderson. Second row: R.G.D. Laffan, R.V. Gibbs, Hon. Also listed under LAN.PH.5188 as all photographs have individual PH inventory numbers. Albumen print on a supporting mount and behind a window mount of off-white mount board. The two mounts are glued firmly together. The frame is stained oak. The mount is decorated with watercolours and captions have been written in the lower border of the mount. These have been reinforced with "biro". The mount has a gilded bevel edge. "Hill and Saunders" "Eton" has been blind stamped on the mount. On the back of the mount there is pencil writing "Agar Robartes" "Fit in own frame". There is a wooden backing board which covers only part of the frame. "Hon Agar Robartes" is written in pencil on this. SC 2003.

Provenance

A gift from the Hon. Gerald Agar-Robartes, 7th Viscount Clifden, who gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953 and continued to live there with his sisters, Everilda and Violet, until his death in 1966.
