Summary

Framed and mounted black and white photograph, entitled Atheanaeum, May 1914, showing a group of nineteen young men, standing and seated, with two dogs, outside brick building. The names of the group are written beneath. From left to right, back row, G.H.Allgood. Marquess of Hartington. G.Birkbeck. K.Gladstone. Middle row; R.J.F.Chance. M.C.Lawrence. W.Holland Hibbert. G.K.Dunning. A.Milburn. I.M.Hedley (with dog); front row, seated, A.W.H.James. T.Guthrie. G.L.Davies. O.J.Lawrence. Hon C.E.Agar-Robartes (with dog). M.Field. J.P.Walker. O.Lyttelton. R.S.Clarke. Photograph numbered LAN.PH.5221 as all photographs have individual PH numbers. Albumen print, mounted on an off-white mount board. The mount board has a plate mark and beige printed surround around the photograph. There are painted captions on the mount. "Stearn and Sons" and "Cambridge" are printed on the mount. There is a pencil inscription on the reverse (as caption). the frame is oak with a gilt slip and a wooden backboard. The backboard is held with paper strips and nails. There is a paper label stuck to the backboard printed: From Stearn and Sons, Artists and Photographers, 72 Bridge Street, Cambridge". "Hon. C.E. Agar Robartes" is written in ink on the label. "Rt. Hon" is written in pencil.

Provenance

A gift from the Hon. Gerald Agar-Robartes, 7th Viscount Clifden, who gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953 and lived there with his sisters, Everilda and Violet, until his death in 1966.
