Summary
A framed black and white photograph of the winning Oxford University polo team who beat Cambridge at Hurlingham in 1903. The four young men sit on their horses facing the camera with their sticks over their right shoulders, their sleeves rolled up, and all wear waistcoats and hard hats. Behind them is a path running alongside a hedge and trees. The title, scores and date are written around the photograph. The names of the players are also underneath the photograph, from left to right: D. Milburn, L.H. Hardy, The Hon. T.C.Agar-Robartes, W.H. Pearson. Photograph numbered LAN.PH.5213 as all photographs have PH numbers. Platinum print on supporting mount of grey/green mount board. On the reverse of the mount is an albumen print on an intermediate layer of off-white paper. Under the albumen print "Gillman and Co Ltd." "Oxford" is printed. "Fancy frame" is written in pencil. The platinum print is behind a double window mount. Next to the supporting mount is an off-white window mount. A grey mount board window mount is glued to that. This has been annotated in watercolour. This appears to have been added to later with further paint. The supporting mount has been attached to the window mount with self-adhesive tape. There is a piece of acid free card and hardboard behind the mount. The frame is painted wood with a relief decoration and a gilt slip.
Provenance
A gift from the Hon. Gerald Agar-Robartes, later 7th Viscount Clifden, 1883-1966, who gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953 and continued to live there with his sisters, Everilda and Violet, until his death in 1966.
