Summary
False door to the west elevation of Saltram House. The window takes the form of a central door case. It is round arched and surmounted by a triangular pediment with square entasised Tuscan pilasters. To its centre is a semi circular arched window, detailed to look like a door. The whole is constructed on two moulded granite steps, the lower of which is all but buried in the gravel. The whole surround is set into the render/stucco façade of the building.
Provenance
The available archaeological evidence does not establish the date of the construction of the West range at Saltram but the facade is suggested as mid 18th century The Mansion House by descent to Edmund Robert Parker,(inter-alia) was accepted in lieu of Estate Duty by HM Treasury and transferred to NT in 1957.
