Summary
Chalk and wash on paper, John Parker, 1st Earl of Morley (1772-1840) by John Downman, RA (Ruabon, North Wales 1750 – Wrexham 1824). Son of 1st Lord Boringdon and Theresa Robinson. Full length standing to the left, in the uniform of a Colonel of the North Devon Militia, his left hand on his sword, his right on a stick and holding a letter signed 'York' in a giltwood frame possibly of a later date.Signed and dated. Foot placed beyond the border. This is not the artist's intention but has been caused by the way in which the mount has been cut around the foot.
Provenance
Acquired by John Parker (1772-1840), when 2nd Lord Boringdon and thence by descent to Edmund Robert Parker (1877-1951), 4th Earl of Morley and accepted by H.M. Treasury in lieu of fulll payment of Estate Duty from his Executors and transferred to NT in 1957.
