Summary
A mahogany pedestal sideboard, English, circa 1820 - circa 1830, possibly by or retailed by James Winter & Sons of Wardour Street, London. Of two pedestals, each topped by a sunken 'paneled' drawer above a tapering cupboard, faced by a sunken 'paneled' door, below. The cupboards with canted angles. The left-hand pedestal with a fall front; the right hand pedestal with a drawer. Each pedestal raised on lion's paw-carved feet and topped by a pierced brass gallery of small balusters. The central section backed by a scrolling, shell-centred backboard carved with paterae. Two sunken 'paneled' frieze drawers below. Inlaid with satinwood plaques and ebony lines. Mounted with gilt brass ring handles and lion mask backplates. An almost identical sideboard was amongst the contents of the attics at Althorp sold at Christie's in July 2010. It was stamped 'JAMES WINTER AND SONS, 151, 153, 155 WARDOUR ST, SOHO, LONDON', who may either have made or retailed it.

Date or method of acquisition not recorded but at Saltram by 1951 and accepted in part payment of death duties by HM Treasury from the executors of Edmund Robert Parker (1877 - 1951), 4th Earl of Morley and transferred to the National Trust in 1957.
