Summary
A white-painted steel and mesh chair, one of a pair, American, circa 1960s, the rectangular back and seat with square-section steel frame, inset mesh seat and back panel, on four square-section legs, with two striped cushions with matching piping for the back and seat. The chairs are the same model as those used by Patrick Gwynne on the terrace of the Serpentine Restaurant which he designed in 1964 (demolished 1990). Patrick Gwynne had the seat and backrest cushions made for the chairs, the cushions match those found on the wall sofa (NT 864307) and the wall bench (NT 864317) found at The Homewood. Seat stuffing has been replaced.
Provenance
These chairs were acquired by Patrick Gwynne, circa 1960s, and he had the seat and back cushions made to accompany them. The Homewood and some of its contents were given to the National Trust by Patrick Gwynne in 1999.
