Summary
Ice pail liner, one of a pair, sterling silver, by William Fountain, London, 1810/11. The circular sleeve of the liner is seamed with plain square wires top and bottom and is soldered to a flat base plate which has a larger diameter in order to rest against the sides of the pail. For the associated rim, and the ice pail into which they fit see 852069.5 and 852069.1

Provenance
By descent from 1st Earl of Bristol and accepted in lieu of death duties by HM Treasury in 1956 following the death of the 4th Marquess of Bristol. Loaned to the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund, and then transferred to the National Trust in 1983.

Marks and inscriptions
Outer side of sleeve: Hallmarks: maker’s mark ‘WF’ italics in a rectangular punch (Arthur Grimwade, London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, 1990, no. 3127), lion passant, date letter ‘P’ and monarch’s head. Lip: One pin hole punched to match marks on associated pail.
