Summary
Eleven sepia stipple engravings, the two Duchesses of Devonshire: Lady Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire (1757–1806) and Lady Elizabeth Christiana Hervey, later Duchess of Devonshire (Lady Elizabeth Foster) (1759-1824), (after John Downman, RA) by Eugene Lily. 1785. Full-length portraits, very pale, The Duchess of Devonshire is seated in a landscape in a long white dress, her hands folded on her lap; Lady Elizabeth Foster stands beside her at the right, wearing a pale blue dress and holding up a paper from which she is reading. A tree to the right, a distant horizon on the left, with a cloudy sky. Signed 'Eugenie Lily'. Stamped 'Printsellers Association'. Ten large and one small print, (previously twelve in number).
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
