Portly and bearded, wearing brown suit and blue tie. Book in right hand. Black labrador at feet on carpet. Green backcloth. Gun leaning against pillar at back, left. Label below frame 'Mr. G.E. Wythes.

Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
