Summary
Portrait miniature, John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857) by Nathaniel Freese (fl.1794-1814). c.1818. Oval. Half-length portrait of a man, turned to the left, gazing to the left, wearing the uniform of the Leicestershire Yeomanry (black Hussar uniform with red collar of fleur-de-lis, fur pelisse), and siver cross of an Order (not the Garter). Blue eyes, brown hair and side whiskers, fresh complexion, aged about forty. Dark background. Engraved on back of gold case 'John Henry, 5th Duke of Rutland KG. m. Lady Elizabeth Howard - 1778-1857 - Col of Leicestershire Yeomanry - by N. Freese'. Similar inscriptions in ink on the backing card 'Duke of Rutland uniform Black Brunswickers (erased) Rifles instead. By N. Freese'.

Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
