Summary
Portrait miniature, Elizabeth Howard, Duchess of Rutland (1780-1825) after John Sanders (London 1750 - Avon 1825/6). Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young woman, head turned slightly to the left, wearing a white dress and blue scarf. Pale blue eyes, black hair with tight ringlets, tied with a blue ribbon, pale complexion, modelled with blue stipple. Grey background. Engraved inside lid of gold locket 'Elizabeth, Duchess of Rutland, daughter of 5th Earl of Carlisle'. On the front of the gold locket is her monogram surmounted by a coronet, and on the back an empty glass oval intended for a tress of hair. Wife of 5th Duke of Rutland, mother of Katherine Manners, wife of 2nd Marquess. Copied from a full length portrait by John Sanders at Belvoir Castle.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably given to her daughter, Katherine, Marchioness of Bristol.
