Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Mary Lepel, Lady Hervey (1706-1768), attributed to Samuel Cotes (London 1734 – Chelsea 1818). Oval. Half-length portrait of a woman, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a pale grey cloak edged with black fur, black cap with pink ribbon and lined with white lace. Grey eyes with apiky eyelashes, grey hair, very pale (? faded) complexion thinly painted to expose ivory. Mottled drab background.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
