Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albermarle (c.1653 – 1688) by Nicholas Dixon (c.1645 – c.1708). Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a grey robe. Blue eyes, black full-bottomed wig, pale complexion firmly modelled with red and blue stipple. Light brown background. Signed lower right in black paint with monogram ND. Inscribed on backing paper under glass, 'The Second Duke of Albemarle by Nocolas Dickson'. And in a later hand 'Cristopher Monk, 2nd E of Albemarle by Nathaniel Dixon'. Presumably painted before the sitter was appointed KG in 1670.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
