Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, Mary Gargrave, Lady Carr (d.1675), attributed to Samuel Cooper (London 1608 – London 1672). Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a woman, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white cap and dress with a pink bow. Grey eyes with firmly modelled eyelids and nose, pale complexion. Plain blue background. Engraved on back of gold case 'Lady Carr, Grandmother to the Earl of Bristol's 1st wife, by Cowper'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably acquired by the 1st Earl of Bristol in 1721.
