Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, Isabella Carr, Mrs John Hervey (1669/70-1693) (after Joseph Brook) by Peter Cross (c.1645 - London 1724). c.1693. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young woman, head turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a low-cut blue and pink dress. Brown eyes, brown hair over back of shoulders, pink complexion, painted in rather coarse body colour with short modelling strokes (an early repair to the forehead) Dark brown background. Signed lower left with gold monogram PC. Latin inscription engraved on back of gold case.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Commissioned by the 1st Earl of Bristol, c.1693.
