Summary
Graphite on paper, Lord Arthur Charles Hervey, later The Rt. Rev.Lord Arthur Charles Hervey, (1808-1894) Bishop of Bath and Wells and Lady Sophia Elizabeth Caroline Hervey, later Lady Sophia Windham (1811-1863) as children by Friedrich Rehberg (Hanover 1758 – Munich 1835). Full-length portraits of two children, seated together on a bank in an Italian landscape with their arms around each other’s shoulders and hands clasped in front. Both have short hair. He wears a suit with frilled collar; two rows of buttons down tunic, she wears an empire-style dress caught under the bust with a dark sash. Background consists of building and poplars on the left, and a river and bridge on the right. In frame and glazed, black with inner and outer rim gilded and ornamented, rest of moulding plain.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
