Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Lady Mary Caroline Hervey, Countess of Erne (1753-1842) by Thomas Horace Murton (fl.1801-1804). 1801. Three-quarter length portrait of a woman, wearing a grey silk coat edged with fur over white gown and a pearl and bead necklace; small black bonnet with band under her chin; brown hair and eyes, fair complexion. Seated on red sofa before dark background. A copy by Thomas H. Murton of a picture at Wortley Hall, Sheffield. The dark background is inscribed 'Thos. Horace Murton, 1801'. Label on back 'This portrait of Mary Countess Erne (signed and dated by the artist 1801), was given to Lady Alfred Hervey by her aunt Mary, 2nd wife of Robert 2nd Earl of Liverpool. It had formerly belonged to Louisa Theodora, 1st wife of Robert 2nd Earl of Liverpool, sister of Lady Erne and aunt to Lord Alfred Henry. Lady Erne and Lady Liverpool being sisters of Frederick Willam 1st Marquess of Bristol.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
