A pair of ebonised and monochrome painted open bookcases, designed by John Diblee Crace, London circa 1879 The moulded cornice with a repeating floral scroll painted frieze above open shelves flanked by baluster turned columns painted to simulate fluting, the conforming lower section raised on a plinth base. John Diblee Crace (1838 - 1919) was a British interior designer who provided decorative schemes for many notable buildings and interiors. The 3rd Marquess employed the firm of Penrose and Crace to carry our the present scheme. Crace was well known for his Italian Renaissance style of painted decoration, notably in the library at Longleat in Wiltshire and on the staircase of the National Gallery in London.

John Diblee Crace (1838 - 1919) was a British interior designer who provided decorative schemes for many notable buildings and interiors. The 3rd Marquess employed the firm of Penrose and Crace to carry our the present scheme. Crace was well known for his Italian Renaissance style of painted decoration, notably in the library at Longleat in Wiltshire and on the staircase of the National Gallery in London.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. The bookcases were designed anf fitted by Pensose and Crace for the Pompeii Room at Ickworth in 1879.
