Summary

Gate pier. Decorative metalwork support to right-hand gate. The cast-iron gates and screens forming the Downpatrick Entrance to Castle Ward Estate are in 19th-century Gothic Revival style and are comprised of a pair of driveway gates set between octagonal piers with screens extending to either side, terminating with secondary piers matching those of the gates. The gates, piers and screens are all cast from grey cast iron. The gate piers comprise of several separate castings, base, openwork side panels and capping elements all bolted to a concrete foundation. Note: Maker’s name is yet to be established.
