Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Edward Southwell Ward, 3rd Viscount Bangor (1790 - 1837) by Louis-Marie Autissier (Vannes 1772 - Brussels 1830). 1826. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, in a blue coat with brass buttons, yellow waistcoat, white neckcloth and shirt with frilled front. Light brown eyes, black hair and side-whiskers, pale complexion, aged 35. Mottled 'tortoiseshell' sky background. A characteristic work by Autissier, with his typical signature and date. Edward Ward was married in February 1826, and probably spent his honeymoon in Paris, where the ministure would have been painted. Edward Southwell Ward was the son of the Hon Edward Ward MP, and nephew of Nicholas, 2nd Viscount Bangor, whom he succeeded as 3rd Viscount in 1827. He married in 1826, Harriet Margaret Maxwell, 2nd daughter of the Reverend Henry Maxwell, later 6th Lord Fareham, and his wife, Lady Anne Butler, eldest daughter of the 2nd Earl of Carrick. The 3rd Viscount predeceased his wife, who in 1841 married Major Andrew Nugent, not herself dying until 1880. With CWD.P.30.
