Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, The Hon. Bernard Matthew Ward (1831-1918) and his brother The Hon. Crosbie Ward (1836-1858), Irish School, c.1840. Two children on a sofa. Crosbie to the left in a blue-sprigged white dress holding flowers in his lap; blue eyes straight fair hair, aged about 4. Bernard to the right in a blue coat with white collar and white trousers; brown eyes, fair wavy hair, aged about 10. Brown speckled background. The sitters are believed to be the 4th and 6th sons of Edward Southwell Ward, 3rd Viscount Bangor and Harriet Margaret Maxwell. The Hon. Bernard Ward (1831-1918), later Lieutenant-General, married (i) Emily Maria La Touche and (ii) Laura Maberly. The Hon Crosbie Ward (1836-1858, later lieutenant in the 73rd Regiment. With CWD.P.30.
