Summary
One of six leather fire buckets. Each dated 1845, bearing initials I.B. - Iohannis [i.e. John] Barneby.
Full description
These 19th century fire buckets are believed to have originated in Brockhampton House, the red brick Georgian Mansion at the top of Brockhampton Estate. They were provided to the house by an insurance company when a policy was taken out on the house to cover the risk of fire. They are made of leather and decorated with gold painted I. B. initals and dated to 1845. The initials are a latinised form of John Barneby's initials. Six of these buckets are in our collection and on display to the public.
