Summary
A set of seven rosewood and cane chairs, probably made by Gillows of Lancaster, or Gillow & Co., of Oxford Street, London, circa 1820 - 1830. One of the set with incised initials 'IB'. Each having an arched toprail centred by a shell between scrolls; the horizontal splat formed from two scrolls. The cane seat on moulded seat rails, turned, tapering and fluted front legs and outswept rectangular-section rear legs. -- The design of these chairs conforms closely to other chairs which came from Gillow & Co.'s Oxford Street shop. Other Gillows chairs were also stamped with the initials of their maker. Payments to the firm of Gillows occur in account books of work done at Farnborough in the first half of the 19th century and other furniture, such as the dining table [NT 830185], were supplied by the firm.
Provenance
The house acquired by the Treasury in lieu of death duties in 1960, and transferred to the National Trust. The principal furnishings acquired in the late 1980s with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
