Summary
A mahogany kneehole washstand, English, commissioned from Lipman's in 1912. The rectangular top with glass cover and central frieze drawer flanked by cupboards enclosed by panelled doors, on square tapering legs, to the back edge a plate glass splashguard is held between upright posts with brass urn finials. Part of a three-piece bedroom suite comprising wardrobe (NT 825234) dressing table (NT 825248) and washstand (NT 825242).
Provenance
This item, as part of the bedroom suite, was commissioned by the maternal grandfather of the donors, Sim Grawl, as a wedding present for his younger daughter Frances (Fanny). Sim Grawl was an interior decorator, descendant of a Viennese family called Grohl, and employed by Maple's (John Maple and Co. of Tottenham Court Road, London). The suite was delivered in time for the marriage of Sydney Morant and Frances Grawl (parents of the donors) in March 1912. After the death of Frances the suite was offered to the Geffrye Museum to ensure its survival intact but, for lack of space, the offer was declined.
