Summary
One of a matched set of six yew, elm and cherry Windsor armchairs, English, circa 1850, three stamped G.WILSON GRANTHAM on the rear of the seat surface and each with pierced shaped splat and curved arm bow on ring-turned supports, figured elm seat and ring-turned legs joined by a crinoline stretcher.
Full description
Lincolnshire had a very active Windsor chair-making tradition right through the 19th century. Many of the makers in this region stamped their chairs on the upper rear surface of the seat and George Wilson of Grantham (fl. 1841-1891) was one such chair-maker. The Lincolnshire chair-makers are discussed at length in chapter 3 of Bernard Cotton 'The English Regional chair', 1990.
