Summary
Wood sculpture raised on two stone plinths, Spaceframe by Anthony Twentyman (1907 - 1989), 1987 Abstract form. Large piece of garden sculpture, an interweaving zig-zag design. Rectangular pine plank construction, painted black, and surmounted by curved piece, the end painted with a red circle. Three-dimensional wooden sculpture consisting of seven wooden horizontal planks, six vertical planks, supported on two concrete blocks, all painted in black with two red painted circles on either side of the top curved plank. The wooden planks are between 122 and 125 mm wide and between 74 and 80 mm thick. There are six straight planks and one curved one at the top. The longest plank is the bottom one and measures 3700mm in length. Each plank is shorter than the one below, with the shortest straight plank measuring 2300mm in length. The top plank is curved and measures 2160 mm in length. The top plank is thinner and measures 38mm in thickness. The planks are bolted together to form the structure as seen in the photographs above, and the lowest plank is bolted to the two concrete blocks supporting the whole structure. There are two circular shapes on either side of the top plank that are made of plywood painted red. John Sidebotham of Claverely Woodcraft constructed and painted the sculpture in 1987 according to the instructions and sketches of Anthony Twentyman. In a telephone conversation on 17th August 2009, he informed me that the wood was hybrid larch from the Dudmaston Estate, that the red circles were made of plywood, and that the wood was painted with one layer of ‘Solignum Architectural Black’ in a matt finish. He could not remember what the two circles were painted with and suggested that Anthony Twentyman may have carried out the painting of the red circles himself.
