Full description
An oak side table on baluster legs and turned feet with twin stretchers and a fitted with a removable glass top. Beneath the glass top is an embroidered multicoloured wool design, labelled on the reverse 'Catalogue Table / 41 Table / 1939 Nigel Nicolson Esq' and inscribed 'embroidered by Gwen St Aubyn from a design by Duncan Grant, Sissinghurst 1939'.
Provenance
The table top was embroidered by Gwen St Aubyn who was the sister of Harold Nicolson and the lover of Vita Sackville-West. Gwen St Aubyn lived at Sissinghurst with a bedroom in the Tower from 1933-1940. This embroidery pattern was designed by the artist Duncan Grant and was a gift from Vita to Gwen.
