Summary
Watercolour on paper titled "Pont d'Avignon", framed behind glass with passe-partout. By Arthur Herbert Hussey, 5th August 1921. View of the remains of the medieval bridge over the Rhône viewed from Avignon. Foreground: Muddy riverbank with a low shrub left and right. From the right three stone arches of the bridge, two supported by wide piers in the water, span most of the river. The chapel to Saint-Bénézet, with three arched windows below, sits above the closest pier. Framed by the left-most arch, a standing and a sitting figure are fishing on a sandy bank. Background: Shrubs and trees on the opposite bank with low hills behind, a hazy and overcast sky. Titled and dated "Pont d'Avignon 5 8 21" in pencil in the bottom left corner of the watercolour. "Le Pont d'Avignon Sketched by General AH. Hussey 5-8.21 with Christopher Hussey" in ink on the backing paper. Framed in a glazed, gilt frame, with a passe-partout with an ink frame around the window. Reverse covered in brown paper stuck to the frame.
