Summary
A framed needlework sampler worked by Marrlott Bailley 1834 in cross-stitch and satin-stitch with silk threads over linen/cotton plain weaved fabric. At the top half the picture depicts birds and vases with flowers as well as a prayer (“The eye of the lord is on them that fear Him and put their trust in him and keep his commands”) and the name of the embroiderer and year of completion of the piece. At the lower half there is an inscription reading “Remember thy Creator in the days of thy xo. Fear the lord. Shun evil ways.” Below the inscription a crown with the letters ‘W’ and ‘R’ is depicted in the centre and at both sides a symmetrical composition with a tree, deer, duck and butterfly. The remaining space is covered with floral motifs.
