A mahogany dwarf cupboard, English, circa 1870. Enclosed by a pair of panelled doors enclosing shelves and standing on a plinth base, stamped HEAL & SON, LONDON, the lock stamped with initials VR to either side of a crown.
Full description
Heal’s have been in the Tottenham Court Road since 1818 and on its present site since 1840, after being founded in 1810 by John Harris Heal, specialising in bedding and beds. By the end of the 19th century, Heal’s was one of the best known furniture suppliers in London; their reputation carried on through the 20th century mainly due to Sir Ambrose Heal who worked in the company as craftsman, designer and finally Chairman for 60 years (1893-1953).
Provenance
Part of the Hussey collection. The contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 2006 by Mrs. Elizabeth Hussey.
