Summary
A large oak tester bed, designed by Anthony Salvin in 1844. In the Elizabethan Revival style, the deep canopy with moulded cornice and friezes carved with strap-work and swags, hung with a chintz valance, raised on posts with large bulbs carved with leaves and gadroons below square block applied with roundels, the foot-board with baluster column gallery and square end posts applied with bosses and diamond rosettes and terminating in gadrooned feet, the bed hung with drapes, one of the bolt covers annotated in pencil 'Top' and '1844'.
Provenance
Part of the Hussey collection. The contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 2006 by Mrs. Elizabeth Hussey.The original drawings by Anthony Salvin for this bed and one other bed are amongst the Scotney papers kept at Scotney Castle.
