Summary
Pencil on paper with large brown oil or wash stain, bottom right; the paper has been cut bottom right, Hilda studying a model for Burghclere by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959), circa 1930. The sketch relates to Spencer's envisioned series of pictures commemorating the patrons of Sandham Memorial Chapel, John Louis and Mary Behrend, which were to hang in an unbuilt narthex at the entrance of the chapel. Hilda here serves as a model for one of the patrons inspecting a model for the chapel. A worked-up version in oil is in a private collection. In a typically Spencer-esque observational gesture, Hilda is shown bunching her skirt in her hand.
