Summary
Pencil on a creased fragment of tracing (or greaseproof) paper, Study of Christ, for 'The Resurrection of the Soldiers', by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959). Inscribed with the number '25' (circled) upper left; sale stamp (circled) bottom right. As in the painting, Christ is shown accepting a cross from a fallen solider, although He is not bearded in the final version as he is here. Further crosses and the top of a soldier's head (by Christ's lap) are also shown. Spencer often sketched on whatever paper he could find.
