Summary
Pencil on printed lined paper (torn bottom right), Preliminary Sketch for The Resurrection altarpiece, of mules and a recumbent soldier by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959), circa 1923/32. Inscribed at the top: "idea for mules end wall Burghclere". Sketches of battlements and arches on the verso. This is a stylised, formal exploration of space and shape, rather than a detailed study. The position of the soldier's legs have been explored; initially outstretched they have been bent behind his back.
