Summary
Pencil drawing on paper, Study for the background of 'The Resurrection of the Soldiers' and a hospital trolley by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959) circa 1923. Inscribed top, 'Sketch for end wall 'Resurrection' at Burghclere'. Sketch of mules and the pointed edge of a timber wagon in a landscape, which appear in the far background of the finished picture. To the left is a further sketch of a pair of mules, with a figure whose arms are outstretched across their bodies. In the finished version, this group appears in the very centre of the composition. A metal hosptial trolley has been tentatively drawn (below right); further unclear sketches, including a figure appear bottom left.
