Summary
Pencil on torn, white paper, Study of fallen Soldiers and Mules in the 'The Resurrection of the Soldiers' by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959), inscribed top right in Spencer's hand: "The mules, End wall / Burghclere". The main figure (bottom left) closely corresponds with that in the final version, except that here both arms are outstretched, and he lacks the cross that appears in his lap in the painting; a rank of bushes runs down the middle of the page. A sleeping soldier, tucked against the curved body of a mule, appears above the main sketch, although in the final version he has been repositioned, and is tucked inside the mule to the left. The dislodged wheel from the broken timber wagon also appears in the final version.
