Summary
Pencil on folded paper, partly squared, Sketch of workmen at Sandham Memorial Chapel, with subsidiary studies of soldiers shaking hands by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959), circa 1927/28. Inscribed at top in Spencer's hand: "workmen putting one of the arched panels in place in Burghclere chapel". The sketch of workmen moving one of the arched panels, onto which a canvas would have been stretched, was later worked up by Spencer into an oil painting, 'The Builders, Bird Nesting, Human Efforts' (1935, Yale). The diaphonous striations to the left of the sheet are preparatory sketches for the 'Resurrection of the Soldiers', showing soldiers shaking hands as they rise from the earth (bottom left).
