Summary
Pencil on paper, Architectural studies for the west façade and interior of Sandham Memorial Chapel by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959), circa 1923. Inscribed bottom right (in Spencer's own hand): "I rather like these proportions as it retains Pearsons [sic] roof & your parapet & is a nice big window."; Spencer sale stamp bottom left. The drawing is a progression from 790201, with the door elaborated upon in the bottom sketch. The large arched window with the decorated spandrels has been retained. The nebulous forms to the right bear some similarity to early pensieri for the altarpiece, showing figures gathered closely together (cf. the sketches in the Otter Gallery, Chichester).
