Summary
Pencil on paper, Architectural study for the west end of Sandham Memorial Chapel (recto); sketch with figures (verso) by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959), circa 1923/27. Inscribed top right (probably in Spencer's hand): "idea for west end of chapel / Burghclere". A free, architectural sketch for the west façade of Sandham Memorial Chapel: on the lower level an arched door; the middle tier with an arched window, glazed with square panes, sculpted figures in spandrels above, with a keystone and curved cornice; the roof is gently pitched.
