Summary
Small deerskin chest with domed lid and edged with brass buttons; made early-mid 19c; label inside reads 'Stockdale, saddler, cap, whip and harness maker, Cheapside, Preston'. Haired skin - almost certainly rawhide, i.e. un-tanned, dried skin. Brass lock at front and brass carrying handle at centre top of domed lid. Iron hinges. Leather strapwork decoration at top of lid, at front and round edges of opening. This strapwork is secured with dome headed nails. The wood of the chest is pine and the lining is blue-grey paper.
