Summary
Fireplace and hearth in Mr & Mrs Child's Bedroom In about 1759 a design for the chimneypiece was obtained by the surveyor in charge of the refurbishment from William Chambers, possibly via Joseph Wilton, who also procured designs from him for the Long Gallery chimneypieces. The design was most likely executed by William or John Linnell, who supplied the chimneypiece. Marble fireplace. Shallow, moulded chimneypiece with a bullnose frieze and oval centre stone(?). This is surrounded by an ornately carved mantelpiece that sits on square plinths of the marble fireplace. The hearth is marble. The firebox is lined with plaster? Timber 'firestop' with a plastic ventilation panel replacing the damper. The fender is CMS 772062 and the steel grate (part only) is CMS 772061, brickwork visible as there is no fireback. This room is part of the Child private apartments. These interconnecting rooms were refurbished for Francis Child in 1759 by Matthew Hillyard and incorporated existing materials wherever possible. The room was decorated for the bachelor Francis Child and then used by Robert and Sarah Child. Some of the elements may date to the ownership of the house by Dr Nicholas Barbon (c 1690) and later refurbishments.
