Summary
one of a pair of carved mahogany settees with gilded beading, upholstered in the seventeenth century style crewel work embroidery of floral design. Square seat and serpentine topped back, shaped arms, the fronts carved with fluting on a concave form which scrolls outward at the top, terminating in a circular patera. The seat rail is carved with a ribbon and leaf motif and separated from the upholstery by a gilded bead. Four square legs with block feet equally spaced along the front and two slightly splayed at the back. At the joint with the seat rail there is a square block carved with an oval patera. Five shaped cushions along the back and a bolster at either end. On OPH 151 the middle cushion has a coronet above a coat of arms supported by a pair of crowned lions rampant. Under this the words FIDEI COTICULA CRUX, the cross is the touchstone of faith. The cushions at the end of the back are embroidered with a crowned lion rampant, the Jersey Crest, on the left hand, an eagle with an adder in its beak, the Child's Crest, on the right. On OPH 152 the middle cushion has an embroidered ring with the words AINSI MON AME, Thus my mind of spirit, encircling a view of the sun shining on a marigold, sign of the banking house of Child. The cushion at each end of the back has a griffin amongst the branches. OPH152 is signed 'A 2 Fraser, Felcit. 1898', similarly dated 1899 on OPH 151.
