Summary
Chimneypiece, Dining Room, Mottisfont Abbey, Hampshire. Fireplace of Carrara marble and verde antico. Mantel shelf with dentil course, egg and dart and acanthus leaf moulding. Frieze beneath with panels of serpent and bird decoration. Centre piece of a Medusa head in the verde antico inlay. Frieze stops of the Caduceus. Flanked by outward facing terminal figures on scrolled bases.
Provenance
At Nevill Court, Tunbridge Wells (built c.1860, demolished c.1930). Purchased by Gilbert and Maud Russell for the Dining Room, Mottisfont Abbey from Litchfield and Co. Ltd, London in 1935. Transferred to the National Trust in 1957 under Maud Russell's Memorandum of Wishes.
