Summary
A black and gilt coloured, wooden picture frame. This was the original frame for Anthony Fry's Nude Dancers painting.
Full description
A figure and landscape painter, Anthony Fry joined the London Group in 1955. This work shows one of the themes he has repeatedly returned to throughout his career: dancers in a landscape. In the 1950s, he was interested particularly in the rhythm and movement of the figures together. The golden light was also important to him, so other meanings start to emerge: this does seem to be about freedom and escapism in a kind of ‘arcadia’, a country idyll far from the cares of daily life. The lone figure at the front of the composition is the only suggestion that this existence may not be idyllic for all.
