Full description
Rex Whistler (1905-1944) who designed and painted the decorative scheme in the Whistler Room at Mottisfont Abbey was killed during the Second World War in 1944. While much of the painted scheme was completed, other areas such as the furnishings was not. It appears that Maud Russell (1891-1982), the owner of Mottisfont Abbey commissioned Rex's brother, Laurence Whistler (1912-2000), to design a set of engraved glass fingerplates and bell push surrounds for the room. The design appears to be a tribute to the artistic talents of the Whistler family. Laurence's brother Rex, is represented by a painter's board and paints, while Laurence himself is represented by a burr and other engraving tools.
Provenance
Donated to the National Trust under Maud Russell's Memorandum of Wishes, 1957.
